Rules of the Game FAQ
What's the role of the setter 01/02, M1/M2, OPP/RS, and DS?
What are the basic scoring rules?
Club volleyball games are rally scoring and best of 3 sets played to 25. If a 3rd set is required, it is played to 15. Only if you are in a pool of 3, you will sometimes play 3 sets to 25 regardless of who won the first 2 sets. This is not often but does sometimes happen at smaller tournaments.
How are subs decided?
By the coach, any player except the libero can sub in for anyone in the match, but once they have subbed in or out for a player at a certain position, they can only sub in again for that same player at the same position for the rest of the set.
Setter: Main contributor to the offense (team quarterback). Vocal leader.
O1: Strongest outside, lead attacker, go-to hitter, primary passer, reads the opponents defense and calls out hitters, blocking.
O2: 2nd outside, Blocking, primary passer, consistent hitting.
M1: Strongest middle, blocking, first line of defense, continuous movement, lots of eye work and reading the opponent's setter.
M2: 2nd middle, continuous movement, getting up in the air to hold blockers, lots of eye work and reading opponent's setter.
OPP/RS: Balance of both defense and offense, key blocking position of opponent's outside.
Libero: primary passer, ready to take 2nd ball out of system, vocal leader, relentless pursuit.
DS: Defense specialist, defense and sometimes a back row attacker.
How do liberos work?
The libero is allowed to replace any player in a back-row position only. Replacements involving the libero are not counted as regular substitutions. These replacements are unlimited, but there must be a rally (which can include a play over) between two libero replacements. All Libero transactions must be made behind the 10ft line.
What's the difference between a 4/2, 5/1, and 6/2?
4/2 - 4 hitters and 2 setters
5/1 - 5 hitters and 1 setter
6/2 - 6 hitters and 2 setters
Why is my child the "better" Middle and starting back row?
M1 will mainly start in the back row in either position 5 or 6. Coaches will rotate these starting positions from game to game in order to find a lineup that works best with the opponent.

Reffing Information
-
For those of you who are new to being a club parent, or as a reminder for all parents, your team will be the “work team” 1-2 times per day of play at a tournament and the team will be required to have 2 line judges, 1 scorekeeper (the book), 1 scoreboard (the flip score board), 1 libero tracker, 1 down ref, and a coach or rostered member must do a job at the table or be the down ref (which is near the table and able to monitor the table).
-
5 players and 1 coach are needed to be working at each set.
-
-
USAV sanctioned events and their AAU Chaperone (or coach) for AAU sanctioned events to help at the table. A coach may enlist the help of a rostered adult (which means they have their USAV Chaperone (or coach) membership for USAV sanctioned events and their AAU Chaperone (or coach) for AAU sanctioned events to help at the table.
-
Reminder, no one can do a job other than scoreboard unless they are a coach or the player and/or chaperone fully understands how to do this job – the videos below will give the full instructions.
-
There isn’t a course to pass for AAU ref courses so just be sure the team members and/or chaperone watch the videos.
-
We have an important job as the work team and this reflects on the club if you do not do your job well, so please take this seriously.
-
Be sure to email justin@wpvc.org if your coach has asked to add you as a chaperone (not every team will have one) so you get rostered; generally, there can be only 1 chaperone per team on the roster. A chaperone needs to have an eligible membership and then they can get rostered. This will allow them to help the coach and to work while the team is the “work team” when needed.
